Foam Extinguishers

AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) extinguishers are typically used on fires involving Class A (Solid Combustible) and Class B (Flammable Liquid) risks, as they quickly extinguish the flame and are effective in preventing re-ignition.

They are 94% – 97% water, with a foam additive and work on solid fires by wetting and cooling the lighting object. The foam discharge also forms a physical barrier to prevent oxygen from re-igniting the flame, which is what makes this extinguisher particularly effective on contained liquid fires.

The AFFF extinguisher is preferable to the Dry Powder types for use internally, as the subsequent clean-up required is far less and generally remains local to the fire, unlike the powder which can spread quite a distance and reduce visibility..

Although the AFFF extinguisher also comes with a 35kv electrical conductivity discharge test rating, which certifies users safety if the foam accidentally comes in contact with electricity, it is not recommended for direct use on live electrical equipment. For this reason it is commonly paired with a CO2 unit to make up a Fire Point that addresses all local risks..

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) extinguishers are typically used on fires in live electrical equipment as they use a clean agent gas to extinguish fires without causing a mess, or contaminating sensitive electronics. The gas is non-conductive and is the recommended choice for any electrical fire and works by displacing the oxygen that a fire needs to sustain itself.

The CO2 extinguisher also comes with a Class B rating, which certifies its use on Flammable Liquid fires (petrol, diesel, solvents, etc.) but cannot be used on Class A risks (Solid Combustibles – paper, wood, cardboard, textiles, etc.), Class C risks (Flammable Gases – Propane, Butane, etc.) or Class F risks (cooking oils and fats). For this reason it is commonly paired with a AFF Foam units for Class A, or a Wet Chemical unit for Class F, to make up a Fire Point that addresses all local risks.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

The Dry Powder extinguisher is a multi-purpose extinguisher suitable for use on (Class A, B and C) fires involving combustible solids, flammable liquids and gases. The highly-rated extinguishant is Mono-Ammonium Phosphate, which is a fine powder that can knock down flames quickly and protect users against the radiant heat from a fire.

The down-side with powder is that it can result in intensive clean-up implications, so it might not suit large, indoor, open areas. Whilst it is safe for use on electrical fires, it should be noted that it can cause contamination of sensitive equipment / environments and corrosion of electrical components if not meticulously cleaned.

Ideal for domestic use and a variety of commercial and industrial applications, including outdoor areas and vehicles, where freezing temperatures can adversely affect liquid-based extinguishers. Dry Powder however is not recommended for use in escape routes of premises due to the reduction in visibility caused by the powder, albeit temporary.

The Dry Powder unit is also the only extinguisher internationally approved for use on Class C (gas) fires, however it is recommended that the gas supply be shut off before tackling the fire to avoid the explosion and asphyxiation hazards of the gas flowing into the premises, .
