What To Do When A Flood Happens

In Ireland, rain and flooding are a part of life. Some places especially those near rivers, lakes or on the coastline have a higher flood risk. Flooding can happen for many other reasons too, such as burst pipes or collapsed roofs.

It is always good to know what to do when a building floods, even if you are not in a high risk area.

Before a Flood

Be aware of weather forecasts and if there is heavy rain expected in your area
Know the difference between a Flood Watch and Flood Warning. A flood watch is issued for flooding which is expected after heavy rain has ended. A flood warning means flooding is happening now or will happen soon.
If you know your building is in danger of flooding move furniture to high ground and turn off electrical items

During a Flood

Do not touch electrical items when there is water on the floor.
Do not walk through moving water, as even 6 inches of water can cause falls.

After a Flood

If your building has been flooded, only return when advised to do so by the authorities
Be very careful when entering a building where floodwater has receded. Building foundations, floors and walls may be weakened and could collapse
Keep the power off until an electrician has inspected the building
Use a pump to remove any standing water, especially in areas like basements below ground areas.
Surface water from floors or carpets can be removed using a wet vacuum cleaner
Pressure washers may need to be used to clean mud and other debris from outside walls and yards. Mud left from floodwater can often contain sewage or chemicals.
Once the visible water has been removed you may need a dehumidifier or air scrubber to dry out walls and floors and to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould.
