What is a Tree Stump Grinder and How To Use It

Our tree stump grinder is a 13 hp machine from Camon. We only stock the higher horsepower machines as we feel they get the job done more efficiently than the lower horsepower machines.

If you have unwanted tree stumps in your garden this is the machine for you.  It is a compact machine which efficiently grinds away the tree stump down to 32cm below the ground. Be warned though, while operating the machine is simple, it could take up to 2 hours, depending on the size of the tree stump, to fully grind it away.

How To Use A Tree Stump Grinder

Preparation

  1. Before you start using the machine, make sure to prepare the area.
  2. Remove any rocks and stones from around the tree stump.
  3. Trim the tree stump down to approx. 55cm above the ground. The lower the tree stump, the easier it will be to grind away.
  4. When you are ready to use the machine, make sure you have the correct safety equipment, safety goggles and hard hat to protect from flying debris and ear protectors for the noise.

Using the Stump Grinder

  1. Start the engine and position the machine over the leading edge of the stump.
  2. Slowly rock the cutting disc across the stump to grind it away.
  3. Keep working the machine from side to side, moving forward as the stump is removed.
  4. To stop the machine, close the throttle, release the dead mans handle and wait for the teeth to stop spinning.

After grinding the stump, gather the wood chips and remove.Fill in the stump hole with topsoil and spread grass seed on top.

Thanks for the great tips! Got a few tree stumps out in the yard as well and we’re thinking of changing the landscape a bit.
